Know Your Plant

Mammillaria matudae is a species in the Mammillaria genus, which is one of the largest and most diverse genera of cacti. Native to Mexico, this species is particularly noted for its tall, slender, columnar growth and striking radial spines. It is an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced cactus enthusiasts.

  1. Physical Description:

    • Shape: Cylindrical and columnar, growing singly or forming clusters.
    • Height: Typically grows up to 30–50 cm (12–20 inches) tall and 3–6 cm (1.2–2.4 inches) in diameter.
    • Tubercles: Arranged spirally, conical, and firm, replacing ribs commonly seen in other cacti.
    • Spines:
      • Radial Spines: Fine, white, and hair-like, creating a dense covering.
      • Central Spines: 1–4 darker, slightly stiffer spines in the center.
  2. Flowers:

    • Color: Bright magenta or pink.
    • Size: Small, about 1–1.5 cm (0.4–0.6 inches) in diameter.
    • Arrangement: Forms a beautiful ring or crown at the top of the plant.
    • Season: Blooms during spring and summer.
  3. Fruits and Seeds:

    • Produces elongated, reddish or pink fruits that contain small black seeds, adding to its ornamental appeal.

Care and Cultivation

  1. Light:

    • Requires bright, indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight is tolerated but may cause sunburn in extreme conditions.
    • Indoors, place near a south or east-facing window.
  2. Watering:

    • Water thoroughly and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
    • Reduce watering significantly during the winter dormancy period.
  3. Soil:

    • Prefers well-draining soil, such as a cactus mix with added sand, pumice, or perlite to prevent root rot.
  4. Temperature:

    • Thrives in warm temperatures, ideally between 20°C and 30°C .
    • Protect from frost; the minimum temperature should not drop below 5°C
  5. Fertilizer:

    • Feed with a balanced, diluted cactus fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid fertilizing in winter.
  6. Repotting:

    • Repot every 2–3 years in spring to refresh the soil and accommodate growth. Use a pot with drainage holes.

Propagation

  1. Offsets:
    • This species rarely produces offsets, as it typically grows as a solitary columnar stem.
  2. Seeds:
    • Propagation through seeds is common. Sow seeds in a well-draining soil mix and maintain humidity. Germination can take several weeks.

Common Issues

  1. Overwatering:
    • Can lead to root rot. Ensure proper drainage and avoid waterlogging.
  2. Pests:
    • Susceptible to mealybugs, spider mites, and scale insects. Treat infestations promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
  3. Etiolation:
    • Insufficient light causes the cactus to become elongated and weak. Ensure it receives adequate sunlight.

Unique Features

  • Distinctive Spines: The fine, hair-like white radial spines create a fuzzy appearance, making it visually appealing.
  • Flower Ring: The crown of bright magenta flowers is a hallmark of Mammillaria species, adding ornamental value.
  • Compact Growth: Its upright, slender form makes it ideal for small spaces and container gardening.
Pot Size: 3 Inch Black/White Plastic Basic Nursery Pot.
Plant Size: 1.5 Inch To 3 Inch Diameter.
