Know Your Plant
Epipremnum amplissimum also called narrow leaf monstera is a species of tropical plant that is native to the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. It is a member of the Araceae family and is related to other popular houseplants like the pothos (Epipremnum aureum) and the devil's ivy (Epipremnum pinnatum). This plant is known for its lush, trailing vines and attractive foliage.
Foliage: Epipremnum amplissimum has large, heart-shaped leaves with a glossy appearance. The leaves are typically dark green with prominent silvery-white or pale yellow variegation. The variegation can vary in intensity, creating a striking contrast against the green.
Light: This plant prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some morning or evening sun but should be protected from intense, direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering: Allow the top inch or two of the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's essential to let the soil dry slightly before watering again. Be sure to use a well-draining potting mix and a pot with drainage holes.
Temperature: Epipremnum amplissimum prefers a warm and humid environment. It thrives at temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Avoid exposing it to cold drafts or temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
Humidity: These plants appreciate higher humidity levels. You can maintain humidity by misting the leaves regularly, using a humidity tray, or placing a humidifier nearby.
Fertilizing: Feed your Epipremnum amplissimum with a balanced, liquid houseplant fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant's growth slows down.
Pruning: Prune the plant to encourage bushier growth and to control its size. Trim back leggy stems and remove any yellow or damaged leaves.
Propagation: You can propagate Epipremnum amplissimum through stem cuttings. Take a cutting with at least one node (where leaves are attached) and place it in water or directly into potting soil. It should root and start growing in a few weeks.
Pests and Diseases: Keep an eye out for common houseplant pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids. If you notice any infestations, treat the plant with appropriate remedies. Additionally, ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
