Know Your Plant

Sempervivum arachnoideum, commonly known as the cobweb houseleek or hens and chicks, is a species of succulent plant in the family Crassulaceae. These plants are known for their rosette-shaped clusters of thick, fleshy leaves and are popular in gardens and rockeries for their unique appearance and ease of care.

Sempervivum arachnoideum forms tight rosettes of fleshy leaves. The leaves are often covered in fine, white, or silvery hairs that give them a cobweb-like appearance. The rosettes can range in color from green to red, and they often produce small offsets (pups) around the main rosette

Spider Web Care

  1. Sunlight: Provide your Sempervivum arachnoideum with plenty of sunlight. They thrive in full sun to partial shade. If you're growing them indoors, place them near a sunny window where they can receive several hours of indirect or direct sunlight daily.

  2. Well-Draining Soil: Plant your Sempervivum arachnoideum in well-draining soil. A mixture of cactus or succulent potting mix with added perlite or sand works well. Good drainage is crucial to prevent root rot.

  3. Watering: Sempervivums are drought-tolerant and prefer to dry out between waterings. Water the plants thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch, but be sure not to let them sit in standing water. Water at the base of the plant and avoid getting the leaves wet to prevent rot. In general, you'll water more frequently in the growing season (spring and summer) and reduce watering in the dormant season (fall and winter).

  4. Temperature: Sempervivum arachnoideum is cold hardy and can withstand freezing temperatures. In hot climates, provide some afternoon shade to protect them from excessive heat and sun during the hottest part of the day.

  5. Container Gardening: Sempervivums are excellent container plants. Choose a pot with drainage holes to ensure excess water can escape. The shallow-rooted nature of these plants makes them ideal for shallow containers or trough gardens.

  6. Propagation: These plants readily produce offsets, or "pups," around the main rosette. You can separate and transplant these pups to create new plants. Allow the separated offsets to air dry for a day or two before planting them in well-draining soil.

  7. Pruning: Remove dead or decaying leaves from the rosettes to maintain the plant's appearance and prevent rot. When the main rosette starts to die after flowering, it's a sign that it's nearing the end of its life cycle. At this point, you can remove the dying rosette and allow the surrounding pups to take over.

  8. Pests and Diseases: Sempervivum arachnoideum is relatively pest and disease-resistant. However, keep an eye out for common succulent pests like mealybugs and aphids. If you notice an infestation, treat it promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
