Product description

Know your Plant

Gymnocalycium is a genus of small, globular cacti native to South America, primarily Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, southern Bolivia, and parts of Brazil. This genus is prized for its attractive, colorful flowers and low-maintenance care, making it a favorite among cactus collectors and enthusiasts.

1. Name Origin:
   - Derived from the Greek words *gymnos* (naked) and *kalyx* (calyx), referring to the flower buds lacking spines or hair.

2. Physical Appearance:
   - Shape: Typically small and spherical or slightly flattened.
   - Size: Usually grows up to 4–15 cm in diameter.
   - Color: Green to bluish-green body with prominent ribs. Some species may appear brownish due to pigmentation.
   - Spines: Short to medium-length spines radiating from distinct areoles.

3. Flowers:
   - Colors: White-pink with a delicate sheen.
   - Location: Blooms emerge from the apex (top) of the plant.
-Season: Typically bloom in late spring to early summer.

Popular Species
1. Gymnocalycium mihanovichii: Known for its colorful mutants (e.g., the "Moon Cactus").
2. Gymnocalycium baldianum: Renowned for its bright red to pink flowers.
3. Gymnocalycium saglionis: Larger species with robust spines.
4. Gymnocalycium friedrichii: Features striking markings and colorful flowers.

This variety is cross of mihanovichii and friedrichii

Care and Cultivation

1. Light:
   - Prefers bright, indirect sunlight. Prolonged exposure to harsh sun may cause sunburn.
   - Indoors, place near a sunny window with filtered light.

2. Watering:
   - Follow the "soak and dry" method: water thoroughly and allow the soil to dry completely before re-watering.
   - Reduce watering in winter when the plant is dormant.

3. Soil:
   - Well-draining cactus mix is essential. You can improve drainage by adding sand, pumice, or perlite.

4. Temperature
   - Thrives in temperatures between 15°C and 38°C .
   - Protect from frost; minimum temperature of 5°C  is ideal.

5. Fertilizer:
   - Use a diluted cactus fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid fertilizing during dormancy.

6. Repotting:
   - Repot every 2–3 years in spring to refresh the soil. Handle carefully due to spines.

Propagation
1. Offsets: Many Gymnocalycium species produce small offsets (pups) at the base, which can be separated and replanted.
2. Seeds: Sow seeds in a well-draining medium and maintain humidity. Germination may take weeks to months.

Common Issues
1. Overwatering: Leads to root rot. Ensure soil is well-draining and avoid standing water.
2. Pests: Watch for mealybugs, spider mites, and scale insects. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
3. Sunburn: Sudden exposure to intense sunlight can cause discoloration or scarring. Gradually acclimate to brighter light.
